There’s nothing quite like walking out of the salon with a fresh spray tan — that warm, golden glow that makes you look like you just stepped off a beach holiday. But if you’ve ever watched your tan fade unevenly after just a few days, you know the frustration. The good news? With a little preparation and some simple aftercare habits, you can genuinely double the life of your spray tan and keep it fading beautifully.

We’ve been doing spray tans at Beauty on Park Street for years — using professional-grade formulas from Moroccan Tan, Black Magic, and Solaire — and these are the exact tips we give every client before they leave the salon.

Prep is everything

The biggest mistake people make with spray tans happens before they even set foot in the salon. Your skin needs to be a smooth, clean canvas for the solution to develop evenly — and that means a little preparation the day before your appointment.

Exfoliate 24 hours before

Give your whole body a thorough exfoliation the day before your tan. Use a gentle body scrub or an exfoliating mitt in the shower, paying extra attention to areas that tend to build up dry skin: elbows, knees, ankles, wrists, and the tops of your feet. These are the spots where spray tan loves to cling and go patchy, so buffing away dead skin cells beforehand gives you a much more even result.

Avoid harsh chemical exfoliants or anything with AHAs and BHAs — stick to a physical scrub. You want to remove dead skin without irritating or sensitising the surface.

Shave or wax beforehand

If you’re planning to shave or wax, do it at least 24 hours before your spray tan. Shaving right before your appointment can leave tiny micro-cuts and open pores that the tanning solution seeps into, creating little dark dots (not the look we’re going for). Waxing should ideally be done 48 hours before, as freshly waxed skin can react differently to the DHA in the tanning solution.

Skip moisturiser on the day

On the day of your appointment, shower as normal but do not apply any moisturiser, deodorant, perfume, or body oil. These products create a barrier on your skin that prevents the tanning solution from absorbing properly. Even a light layer of moisturiser can cause streaking or uneven patches. Come to the salon with completely clean, bare skin.

Pro tip

If you've been using a self-tanner or gradual tan moisturiser, stop using it at least a week before your spray tan appointment. Layering a professional spray tan over existing self-tanner almost always leads to uneven results.

What to wear to your appointment

What you wear to (and home from) your spray tan matters more than you might think. The solution needs time to develop on your skin, and tight clothing or certain fabrics can rub it off or leave marks before it’s had a chance to set.

  • Wear dark, loose-fitting clothing. Think a flowy maxi dress, baggy t-shirt and loose shorts, or a tracksuit. Nothing tight around the waist, bra line, or ankles.
  • Dark colours are your friend. While the excess bronzer washes off, it can transfer onto light-coloured clothing. Stick to black or dark fabrics you’re not precious about.
  • Skip the bra if you can — or wear a loose bralette. A tight bra band is the number one cause of those telltale white lines across the ribcage.
  • Wear loose thongs or slides rather than closed-in shoes or sneakers with socks. Anything that rubs against your feet will disturb the tan before it’s developed.

The first 8 hours: the golden rules

The hours immediately after your spray tan are the most critical. This is when the DHA (the active tanning ingredient) is bonding with the outermost layer of your skin and developing colour. What you do — or don’t do — during this window makes or breaks the longevity of your tan.

Don’t shower

This is the big one. Do not shower, bathe, or get your skin wet for at least 8 hours after your spray tan. Even light rain or washing your hands carelessly can create streaks and uneven patches. If you’re getting a morning tan, that means holding off until the evening. If you’re getting an evening tan, sleep in the solution and shower the next morning.

Don’t sweat

Skip the gym, the run, and even the brisk walk on a humid day. Sweat is water, and water is your tan’s enemy during those first 8 hours. If you know you’re getting a spray tan, schedule it on a rest day or after your workout — never before.

Don’t get wet

This includes swimming pools, rain, doing the dishes without gloves, or even wiping your face with a damp cloth. Treat your body like it’s covered in something precious that hasn’t dried yet — because that’s essentially what’s happening.

Maintaining your tan day by day

Once you’ve made it through the first 8 hours and had your first (gentle) shower, the focus shifts to maintenance. These habits are what separate a tan that lasts 4 days from one that lasts 10.

Moisturise daily — religiously

This is the single most important thing you can do to extend your spray tan. After every shower, apply a generous layer of moisturiser to your entire body. Hydrated skin holds onto a tan far longer than dry skin, because it slows down the natural process of dead skin cells shedding.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser — nothing with retinol, AHAs, glycolic acid, or other active ingredients that accelerate skin cell turnover. A basic body lotion or a coconut-oil-based moisturiser works beautifully. Apply it while your skin is still slightly damp for maximum absorption.

Pat dry after showers

Resist the urge to vigorously towel off after a shower. Rubbing your skin with a towel is essentially exfoliating it, which strips away your tan faster. Instead, gently pat yourself dry with a soft towel. It takes an extra minute, but it makes a genuine difference.

Use a gradual tan moisturiser to extend

Here’s a secret weapon that most people don’t think about: once your spray tan is a few days old and starting to subtly lighten, switch to a gradual tanning moisturiser for your daily moisturising routine. This tops up the colour just enough to keep things looking fresh and even, and it can add an extra 3—4 days to your overall tan life.

Keep showers short and lukewarm

Long, hot showers are one of the fastest ways to strip a spray tan. The hot water opens your pores and accelerates the shedding of your skin’s outer layer — which is exactly where your tan lives. Keep showers as short and cool as you can comfortably manage. Your tan (and your skin in general) will thank you.

Pro tip

Avoid oil-based shower gels and bar soaps. They tend to strip the skin more aggressively. A gentle, pH-balanced body wash is the best choice for keeping your tan intact.

What to avoid

Some things are notorious tan-killers. If you want your glow to last, steer clear of the following:

  • Chlorine. Swimming pools are the number one tan destroyer. Even a quick dip will noticeably lighten your tan and cause it to fade unevenly. If you absolutely must swim, apply a layer of waterproof sunscreen beforehand — but honestly, avoid the pool if you can.
  • Long baths. Soaking in water for extended periods softens your skin and accelerates the shedding process. Quick showers are always better than baths when you’re trying to maintain a tan.
  • Scrubbing or exfoliating. Put away the loofah, the body brush, and the exfoliating gloves until you’re ready to say goodbye to your tan. Any physical scrubbing will remove the tan prematurely and create patchiness.
  • Harsh soaps and body washes. Products with sulphates, alcohol, or strong fragrances strip the skin and fade your tan faster. Use something gentle and moisturising instead.
  • Tight clothing that rubs. Friction from tight waistbands, bra straps, or skinny jeans can wear away your tan in those specific areas, leaving pale lines or patches.
  • Saunas and steam rooms. The combination of heat, moisture, and sweating is basically a tan-removal treatment. Save the sauna for after your tan has run its course.

How to fade gracefully

Even the best spray tan will eventually start to fade — and when it does, you want it to go out gracefully rather than in blotchy patches. Here’s how to manage the tail end of your tan:

Around day 7—10, you’ll notice the tan starting to lighten, particularly on areas that get a lot of friction (inner arms, inner thighs, waistline). If it’s still looking fairly even, keep moisturising and let it fade naturally. A gradual tanning moisturiser can help blend things out beautifully at this stage.

If it’s starting to go noticeably patchy — especially around the hands, feet, elbows, or knees — it’s time to help it on its way. Jump in a warm bath, soak for 15—20 minutes to soften the skin, and then use an exfoliating mitt or scrub to gently buff away the remaining colour. Focus on the patchy areas to even things out. A couple of exfoliation sessions over two days will have you back to a clean slate, ready for your next spray tan.

Don’t try to tan over patchiness

It can be tempting to book another spray tan to “cover up” a patchy fade, but layering fresh solution over uneven old tan will only amplify the problem. Always start fresh. Exfoliate thoroughly, wait a day for your skin to settle, and then come in for a new application.

Our formulas

At Beauty on Park Street, we don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach to spray tanning. We work with three premium professional formulas — Moroccan Tan, Black Magic, and Solaire — and your therapist will help you choose the right one based on your skin tone, the depth of colour you’re after, and any specific preferences you have.

Whether you want a subtle sun-kissed warmth or a deep golden bronze, we can customise the application to suit. If you’re not sure which formula is right for you, just ask — we’re always happy to chat through the options and make a recommendation.

Great value for regulars

If spray tanning is part of your regular routine, our 5-tan package for $200 (normally $250 — that's a $50 saving) is well worth it. It works out to just $40 per tan, and there's no expiry pressure. Ask about it at your next appointment or mention it when you book online.

Quick-reference checklist

Here’s everything above boiled down into a simple routine you can screenshot and keep:

  1. 24 hours before: Exfoliate your whole body in the shower. Shave if needed.
  2. Day of: No moisturiser, deodorant, or perfume. Wear dark, loose clothing and open shoes.
  3. First 8 hours: No water, no sweat, no rain. Let the tan develop undisturbed.
  4. First shower: Lukewarm water only, gentle body wash, pat dry. The initial bronzer will rinse off — don’t panic, your real tan is underneath.
  5. Days 1—5: Moisturise after every shower. Pat dry. Keep showers short and lukewarm.
  6. Days 5—10: Switch to a gradual tanning moisturiser to extend and even out the colour.
  7. When it fades: Exfoliate in a warm bath to remove evenly. Start fresh for your next tan.

Follow these steps and you’ll genuinely get twice the wear out of every spray tan — which means fewer appointments, better value, and more days feeling like a bronzed goddess.
